Beams & Braces x JJH Decking:
Trex Installation in Milton Keynes

Trex Transcend Lineage Island Mist composite decking installation Milton Keynes

The Project

This installation brought us to Milton Keynes to collaborate with Jeff from JJH Decking on a premium outdoor space. The brief called for a contemporary, low-maintenance deck that would stand up to long-term use, and Trex Transcend was the natural choice. The colour combination chosen was Lineage Island Mist for the field boards, framed with Biscayne picture-frame boards for a clean, defined edge with subtle contrast.

Lineage Island Mist: Why This Colour Works

Lineage Island Mist sits at the cooler, greyer end of the Trex Transcend palette, a contemporary tone that works well with both timber and brick surroundings and doesn't date. The picture-frame detail in Biscayne adds definition without competing for attention. The combination reads as intentional and refined, rather than the generic grey that has become overused in outdoor design.

The Substructure: Built to Last

The foundation uses UC4 pressure-treated timber joists mounted on ground screws, avoiding the need for concrete footings and making future adjustment straightforward if needed. Every joist was wrapped with Trex Protect joist tape, a moisture-management layer that prevents water pooling at board contact points and extends the life of the whole structure. This is a step many installers skip, but one we consider non-negotiable for a full-warranty installation.

Carpenters Mate Fixings Throughout

The substructure used Carpenters Mate Hex Head Screws (90mm for joists, 140mm for posts), corrosion-resistant fixings designed specifically for outdoor timber applications and compatible with the Trex system warranty. Railing posts were secured with HD Screws for additional hold. The fixings come with a lifetime warranty of their own, so the full installation is backed end-to-end.

Finishing with Trex Signature Railing

The deck is bordered by a Trex Signature railing system in charcoal black. The dark rail against the light grey deck creates a clean contrast, contemporary without being stark. Hidden fasteners keep the top rail surface unbroken, and matching fascia boards give the frame a finished, built-in appearance rather than the exposed-joist look of a cheaper installation.
