Garden Pergola Installation, Norfolk & Norwich

Garden Pergolas Norfolk.
Built to Stand Out.

A well-built pergola transforms how you use your outdoor space, from a patch of paving to a defined room outside. Timber, composite, and louvred roof options, installed properly and built to last.

Why a Pergola?

Your Garden's Best Structural Investment.

A pergola does something no amount of garden furniture can, it creates a defined outdoor room. The moment you put a frame and a roof over a space, it changes how it feels and how you use it. Guests gravitate towards it. You sit out in weather you wouldn't have before. It becomes the heart of the garden.

We design and build bespoke pergolas that are properly engineered, correctly fixed to ground or wall, and finished to a standard that complements your home rather than clashing with it. Every structure is built to handle Norfolk wind loads and is designed for the long term.

Pergola Styles

Three Ways to Do It

Open beam timber pergola Norwich

Classic

Open Beam Pergola

The traditional pergola form, open rafters that filter light and support climbing plants. Perfect for a relaxed, naturalistic aesthetic. Timber or composite posts, hardwood rafters, and cross-beams. Works brilliantly as a walkway or seating canopy.

Solid roof pergola Norwich

Weatherproof

Solid Roof Pergola

A fully covered structure, either polycarbonate glazing (lets in light, keeps off rain), solid felt and batten (the most weatherproof), or a EPDM rubber flat roof. Ideal for dining areas where you want full rain protection and the option to add sides or screens later.

Louvred roof pergola with adjustable slats

Premium

Louvred Roof Pergola

Adjustable aluminium louvres that open for sun and close for rain, operated manually or by remote. The premium choice for year-round entertaining. Can include integrated gutters, LED strip lighting in the beams, and drop-down side screens.

Specification

How We Build Them

Properly Engineered

Posts set in concrete or bolted to steel baseplate fixings, not just spiked into the ground. We specify post sizes and rafter spans for Norfolk's coastal wind exposure.

Premium Timber

Green oak, Douglas fir, or pressure-treated softwood, we'll advise on the right species for your aesthetic and maintenance preference. All timber is correctly treated and profiled.

Integrated Lighting

LED strip lighting recessed into beams, pendant points at junction posts, or festoon cable runs, all properly wired from a weatherproof outdoor socket or new circuit.

Composite Deck Below

Most of our pergola builds sit over a composite deck, the base and the structure designed and installed together, levels and drainage coordinated from the start.

Common Questions

Pergola FAQ

Most pergolas fall within Permitted Development rights and do not require planning permission, provided they are within the standard height limits for garden structures (max 2.5m to the eaves for structures within 2m of a boundary; max 4m ridge height elsewhere). A pergola with a solid roof may be treated as an outbuilding by some planners, so we always assess the specific design against PD rules during the design process. Listed properties and conservation areas have different rules.

A pergola is typically an open or semi-open structure, posts with beams and an open or slatted roof, designed to define space and support climbing plants or provide partial shade. A gazebo is usually a fully enclosed or roofed freestanding structure with a defined octagonal or hexagonal shape. We build bespoke pergolas in all configurations, including with solid roofs; if you want a fully enclosed, weatherproof structure we'd typically call that a garden room or covered patio structure.

We concrete-set all pergola posts as standard, driven ground spikes are suitable for lightweight decorative structures but are not appropriate for the post sizes and loading we build to. For pergolas over existing hard surfaces (paving, concrete, or decking), we use heavy-duty steel baseplate post anchors bolted through the surface into a concrete fixing. We never use plastic post spikes on a structure we've engineered for longevity.

A correctly built and maintained timber pergola should last 20–30 years. The key factor is timber species and treatment: green oak and Douglas fir are naturally durable and need minimal maintenance beyond an occasional oil; pressure-treated softwood needs re-treating every 2–3 years to maintain protection. Posts are the most vulnerable element, we always set them in concrete to keep the timber out of ground contact, which dramatically extends service life.

Yes, wall-mounted or lean-to pergolas are popular because they reduce the number of posts needed and create a natural transition between inside and outside. We fix to masonry using appropriate wall plates and rawl anchors, always into the structural masonry rather than render or insulation layers. We also ensure any roof drainage is directed away from the house and won't cause damp issues at the wall junction.
